Tomorrow is the worst day of the year
Time was, April Fools Day was kinda fun online.ThinkGeek would announce some amazing new product that was kitschy and didn't really exist - and even then it would be so popular that sometimes they'd create it to fulfill the demand. Google would do something fun on its homepage. A few other sites would do goofy things and people would be all, "D'oh! I can't believe I fell for that."A few years ago, several friends and I conspired to create a dating site based on Pinterest, called Pinpal. We even got a little coverage. Our point in creating it was more to make fun Klout-type scoring sites, but we really got into it. Even created a Pinterest profile for founder Jimmy Addison. That was about the year that everyone jumped on board the April Fools wagon. I'm not saying we were special - just that elaborate April Fools jokes were becoming more and more common. Now, April 1 is a minefield. Anything and everything is probably fake. If it seems fake, it probably isn't. If it seems like it could be real, it's probably fake. If someone says anything, don't believe it.Fortunately, April 1 is a Saturday this year, which means it won't be nearly as bad. Every brand jumps on board. Everyone. Every publication, every social media platform, every everything.Trust no one and nothing.Photo by Sean MacEntee via Flickr Creative Commons.
