Mostly harmless

I've been a huge fan of Douglas Adams for nearly as long as I can remember. The original BBC television series, with its "special" special effects and pitch-perfect casting was absolutely true to the first three of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy trilogy of five parts.(If you think I made an error in that sentence, then go read the books.)I've tried to get my boys to read the series for years, but they just weren't interested. I started acting like Marvin the Depressed Robot the other day, however, and they were sold.I would drop little quips, such as, "A time when men were men, women were women, and small, furry creatures from Alpha Centurai were small, furry creatures from Alpha Centurai."I realized how much reading and watching Douglas Adams had formed my world view - being able to recognize the absurdity of life, and to laugh at the difficult times. When Dirk Gently premiered on BBC America last year, I thrilled at the thought that another of Douglas Adams' creations would find its way to the small screen.Adams' work is far too complex and, well, odd, to translate well into a movie. Though I was less disappointed with the Hitchhikers movie than I expected, it still doesn't hold a candle to the original series, despite much better special effects.There are few minds as twisted and as creative as Adams' was, and we are the poorer for it.Don't forget your towel.Douglas Adams quote via Quotefancy.
