An ode to staying in bed
Every once in a while, you need to just stay in bed, under the covers, and let the day slide by you. It's important to indulge in those feelings, and to allow yourself to feel what you need to feel. This morning, I didn't really want to get out of bed. My dog, Lumi, came to me, nosed my arm and then burrowed under the bed so she'd be there when I got up to give her a long walk. But I couldn't. I fell asleep, woke up; fell asleep; woke up, fell asleep. Then woke up and lay there.Eventually, I got up and got out of bed and went about my day. But there is a power in allowing yourself that time to stay in bed, under the covers and ignoring the world.I'm a big believer in that your body tells you what you need sometimes. When I was pregnant with my first son, I would stop at the grocery store on the way home and buy steaks. I'd come home with a bag of meat and my husband would look and say, "Well, I guess I know what we're eating tonight."I've always been borderline anemic, so during my pregnancy, despite taking multivitamins with extra iron, my body sometimes needed more iron. So I would find myself in the grocery store, looking at steak.I don't believe you should lock yourself up in your house and stay under the covers forever. That's not healthy. But the occasional pretense that the world doesn't exist outside the covers?Indulge yourself and let yourself feel.Photo by Elizabeth Lies via Unsplash.
